MORE SPOILERS BELOW

Abrams and Matt Reeves have gone on record as saying that Hud's theory about the Cloverfield living in a deep ocean trench for thousands of years is the correct one. But they also say that the satellite falling into the ocean at the end is what woke it up, and that sounds dodgy as all hell. Seems like a better explanation would be that some alien debris from the satellite mutated a sea turtle into the Cloverfield.

There's even one moment towards the end when CLOVERFIELD copies a gag from GODZILLA down to using the same payoff shot.

Which part was that? I haven't seen that movie since it came out on VHS.

YET MORE SPOILERS BELOW

I was wondering this as well. I thought Tom was referring to Hud looking up at the Cloverfield standing over him, like Hank Azaria did when Godzilla '98 was standing above him, but those scenes didn't have the same payoff shots. Anything more specific than that, I wouldn't remember, not having seen GODZILLA since 1998.

Wait, what was the payoff shot in GODZILLA?  All I remember was Azaria narrowly avoiding getting stepped on and then laughing because he got a shot, like anyone in that situation would really do.

I think he was laughing hysterically because he survived almost getting stepped on.

Oh yeah, and thoughts on CLOVERFIELD...

Did anyone else get barf bags passed out by the theater management?  Cuz we did.  I had to get one.  Not so much because I thought I was going to get sick but because I thought it would make a cool movie related souvenir.  Plus who doesn't love a free barf bag?  Never know when you might need it.

Overall I was really into it.  It was basically what I expected, GODZILLA meets BLAIR WITCH, but it felt really fresh and original.

What I loved about the monster was that every time you see it it looks completely different.  We're seeing it from different angles but it was just such a weird looking creature.  I thought the idea of the monster sneaking up at the very end was kind of stupid but the last shot of it was freaky and scary.

The stuff with the off-shoot monsters almost didn't even need to be there, I thought.  It made sense that they would be but the disaster and plight from the big monster was enough for me.

So overall, very cool.  I'll be seeing it again.

Also, my son noted that Hud sounded like NEOPOLIAN DYNAMITE, which I thought was a really funny and somewhat accurate observation.

ALSO...people mention sequels and making it into a franchise, which I hope doesn't happen in this case.  If they made a second movie that went into more detail about what the first one was about it'll just cheapen it.  Kinda like BLAIR WITCH 2...it just cheapened the first one.  Plus it didn't help that it was a horrible movie.  I'm sure JJ and co. are smarter then that, though.

Probably, yeah.  I just remember thinking that it was a weird reaction that kind of killed the tension.  Then again, not like the movie had any kind of tension to begin with.

If I remember correctly:

The sudden gotcha shot of the monster jumping towards the camera and chomping a helicopter.  The angle was slightly different in CLOVERFIELD and we are looking from the helicopter's POV rather than just past it, but it's the exact same gag.

The GODZILLA shot ended with a fake, CG helicopter blade flying up into the camera.

I liked it.  Met the expectations I had for it.  I too got a case of the shivers when the ESB collapsed.  Actually, not the actual collapse, but the dust and debris.  It's crazy that effects people know how to make that more realistic now that we've seen it happen in really life.

But yeah, while I wasn't too annoyed with the leads, I can see losing patience with them.  And the jokeyness I thought was realistic as I'm pretty sure that's how I would've acted, because I can't deal with heavy shit, and my response in the past has been to uncontrollably crack jokes.

Would've been cooler if Nathan Fillion played Rob, and Greg Grunberg played the camera dude.  For some reason I was picturing this casting as I Was watching the film.

If they wanted to use "names" that would have been an awesome casting.

I liked the whole movie. Not something I'd see in theater's twice - but, a fun little ride.

My friends and I speculated that there was more than on giant monster because it looked so friggin' different everytime we saw it. At least the one at the end - how did they not see it anywhere near them? It had to be smaller than the original.

Also, I thought Hud sounded like Jonah Hill in Superbad.

For serious?  When the windows blew out in that convenience store I thought I was on a Universal Studios ride.

To be fair, I do always wish I was on a Universal Studios ride.

Right before that, and right after it.  Just the coming cloud of dust and the after effect with the ash covered streets.

Theories.... sequel ideas... seems like a lot of post-production writing to me...

That's interesting. I also think it's funny all the characters have myspace pages. But they take it a step farther than just characters having pages. They have the characters commenting on each others pages. I guess that's kind of a cute idea.
