I watched about a little over an hour of this movie on dvd, then fell asleep.  Have no real desire to go back and finish.  It's not bad, it's just whatever.

So disagree then.

And let us not disparage Steve's opinion. I remember when I was the only guy who didn't seem to enjoy Cars, and I hardly deserved the flames I got for that...

I don't thing anyone disparage my opinion.  But thanks for the defense.  An with that said...

Are you CRAZY?!?!  How could you not like CARS.  You must not like good movies. Cheesy

Disagree.  So you final saw it?  It just didn't gel for me.  I wouldn't say it was a bad movie, I just didn't like it.
It's Pixar so I bought it on DVD.  Haven't given it a second look yet.  I'm hoping I see what everyone else saw when I finally do.

I felt a bit the same, but watched it again on dvd and loved it.

Good to here.  I'm hoping for the same thing.  I feel so let down that I don't love it as much as most others do.  I feel like I'm missing out.

Agree.

It's so beautiful to look at, and I really liked the way they addressed the issue of an anthropomorphic rat.

"Why are you walking like that?"

"I don't want to constantly have to wash my paws. Did you ever think about how we walk on the same paws that we handle food with?"

Actually, realistically, I don't think it would, but that's because the Academy is terrible about nominating the films that are truly great.

Any system that takes box office and popularity into consideration when judging film quality is flawed.

I thought it was really great.  I think if there were no Best Animated, the Academy would recognize it as a Best Picture nominee.  But I think because of that category, we won't see that happen.

EDIT: I should note, I geeked out and squeaked like a girl when I saw Bomb Voyage in the background of one of the exteriors.

I think it really broke through, and proved there could be an animated movie for adults.

Unless I misunderstood what you meant, I think there already are a few. You consider A Scanner Darkly animated? Or The Simpsons Movie? The South Park Movie?

Edit: I withdraw the Simpsons because that came out post Rat.

Technically SHREK was a animated movie for adults.  Everyone at PDI and Dreamworks were shocked when it became such a huge hit with kids.

Why do you think this?  You've said it before, and I swear up and down, it really wasn't meant primarily for adults.

I don't remember details but I heard this a lot at SIGGRAPH that year. Probably from animators that worked on the film.  (maybe it was all just rumor).

Shrek seems like for adults, but in the way Nutty Professor or Rush Hour are for adults.

But it broke through in a way they didn't.

I disagree.  I think if it was rated R and didn't have the "kid" business it wouldn't have made as much as South Park.  I don't think that many adults would have went to see a movie about a rat without bringing the kids or hearing about it from people that brought there kids.  But that's just my opinion.  I'm sure you could figure it out some way by comparing opening weekend BO from the nighttime shows.  But who's got those numbers?

Does anyone suppose it's likely that we'll see an animated film for adults that generally adults will want to watch, but not kids? Something that breaks through to the general public. The only ones I can think of are the Parker & Stone films, and even then they're depending a whole lot on "from the guys who brought you South Park".

Before someone chimes in with a laundry list of anime, it's still very niche.
