There's a very good chance that standing on principle would have fucked him ultimately.

Totally disagree.  It would have helped him.

Also, this thread reminds me of today's Onion article...

http://www.theonion.com/articles/obama-openly-asks-nation-why-on-earth-he-would-wan,26933/

My favorite quote:

"You can help 40 million Americans receive health care, sign legislation that regulates a financial system run amok, give the order to kill Osama bin Laden, help topple Muammar Qaddafi's tyrannical regime without losing the life of one American soldier, end the war in Iraq, repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell, stave off a second Great Depression, take out more than 30 top al- Qaeda leaders, and somehow everyone still calls you the next Jimmy Carter."

Maybe I'm just not as educated on this issue as I should be, but I'm failing to see the reason to clutch my pearls here.  Detaining terrorist suspects in military custody indefinitely without trial has been happening for 10 years, the only new thing the bill specifies (as far as I can tell) is that it can't be done to American citizens.  And I'm in favor of that.

It's not what I would prefer, obviously, but I don't think an acknowledgement of what has already been happening for a decade, and will go on happening whether it is technically legal or not, is cause to storm the Bastille NOW -- as opposed to in 2001?  If you cared this much, Dalton, I'm not sure why you weren't rending your hair and tearing your garments when Bush actually first put "al Qaeda" in Guantanamo.

Not can't. Can.  http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/with-reservations-obama-signs-act-to-allow-detention-of-citizens/

I'm confused from reading different things about it; I think I read that he said his administration would not do it, and interpreted that as being what's in the bill.  Apologies for the mix-up.

But, in any case, that's already happening already too.  It just would have helped if people were this het up about the issue in 2001.

Kate you're like the Guy from Momento when it comes to me.  I hated Bush for those policies and thought I was voting for someone who would discontinue them not reinforce them.

I just don't recall you being so adamant about it.  I'll have to tattoo DALTON LOVES CIVIL RIGHTS on my arm, I guess.

I NEVER trust Joey's pants.

Okay, now that I'm reading up more on this, it does seem like a seriously shady move.  I don't understand why he's got the WH spokesperson out there hemming and hawwing about how he had to wring his hands and ask Jesus for forgiveness for signing this if he's the one that insisted upon the U.S. citizen clause staying in.

I don't get what the game plan is unless perhaps he was hoping that leaving it in would kill the bill.

In any case, I would count it as a low moment.  There's still no question that I'll be voting Democrat, though.

So the Republicans forcing Obama's hand to do something you and him don't like is leading you to believe making easier for them in the future is the smart play? I can't imagine why Obama is cynical about his base.

California, for the props.

Jordy, be serious.  Obama is cynical about his base because I have the audacity to think you shouldn't fuck with the Bill of Rights?  Particularly after his (and my own) opposition to eight years of an administration playing fast and loose with this kind of stuff? A position which, coincidentally, saw them incurring the disgust of everyone on this board.

Republicans are mean and politics am hard. If you think that's reason enough to not veto a bill that suspends habeas corpus - a basic American right - more power to you. But don't act like my outrage is unjustified.

It's not unjustified, it's in the wrong direction. But whatever, I honestly can't give a fuck anymore. It hurts.

I think you're still confused.  I hope you're still confused?

I re-read the article.  I still think/hope you're still confused.

I'd rather up the chances of Obama having another term by not letting 10 cycles of "Obama is soft on National Defense" happen. If he wins again, he'll have ample room to work and do activism while Hillary prepares. Remember your vote affects the world. Clinton got his dick sucked and now the DEA launders money in Mexico.

A moronic statement.
