Oy, these remakes. I want clever (or at least fun) sequels, not series-scrapping do-overs. Stupid HALLOWEEN remake had to go and make money.
----------------------
Child's Play Remake in the Works Source: Edward Douglas October 20, 2007
While many of producer David Kirschner’s recent movies with his partner Corey Siniega, such as the biopic Miss Potter and the upcoming ;b>Martian Child, might not necessarily be “Shock-worthy”, Kirschner’s second film, Child’s Play roughly twenty years ago kicked off a popular horror franchise that has inspired many imitations and four sequels.
ShockTillYouDrop had a chance to interview Kirschner for his upcoming movie where he surprised us by announcing that they were working on another “Chucky” movie, which would be a remake of the original Child’s Play. (But surely, we all knew this was coming, right?)
“We’re discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning,” Kirschner told us. The next one we’re going to do is we’re going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is.”
“We haven’t come up with anybody yet,” he replied when asked whether they were looking at any of today’s cutting-edge horror directors. “We haven’t really discussed that. We’ve just been working on stories, so I think that’ll be a fun process when we get there.”
Of course, the age-old question of “Why?” immediately came up. “Look at ‘Halloween’” he quickly responded. “It’s kind of commerce to keep the franchise going, and another reason to go see it. For me, it’s exciting, because the first one was really scary and then from there, we kind of… my favorites are 1 and 4. I love 4, it really makes me laugh and I think Jennifer Tilly is so great, but just the idea of going back to where we were the first time around and I think for me, it’s almost 30 years later for me as a filmmaker from where I started to now, and the idea of taking some skill that maybe I didn’t possess then and putting it towards the next film, I think could be exciting.” ‘ Would they possibly use the same script? “I think it would be pretty close to it, that’s for sure, but there’s some other things that we’re exploring also, and some twists that we don’t want the audience to expect, as far as a couple deaths, where you think you’re going in one way and you’re going to go in another way as a result of knowing it and it being such a popular franchise.” These new developments may include learning more about Charles Lee Ray, although they’re discussing whether series regular Brad Dourif will be back in that role and once again voicing Chucky.
But don’t just assume that because we’re well into the 21st Century that Chucky will be any sort of CG motion-captured creation. “It’ll be an animatronic doll, like we do all of them, but animatronics have grown from when we did the first one 20 years ago. We just did the commentary on the 20th Anniversary of it, and all the stars, the little kid Andy Barkley, all of that, so that’s coming out in January/February.”

Awful.
They should remake sequels as well. I'd pay to see a CHILD'S PLAY 2 remake.

The sad part is that I get the fiscal logic behind doing this. Compare what Zombie's HALLOWEEN made against what HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION made. I'm sure the CHILD'S PLAY remake will make more than SEED OF CHUCKY and that the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake will outgross JASON X (I'm not counting the anomalous FREDDY VS. JASON), but all of these series have such loose continuities that you could refresh them without going back to Square One. BRIDE OF CHUCKY did it. H20 did it. JASON X and FVJ did it. I'm not saying they all did it well; BRIDE was the only one that really succeeded on those terms, since H20 did chuck out the four previous sequels and JASON X and FVJ weren't very good. But at least they proved you don't have to jettison everything to get a clean start (well, again, H20 excepted). I mean, hell, half of the sequels in all four franchises don't even logically follow from the point where the previous sequel left off.
My immediate thought after seeing SEED was that they needed to shake up the series with the next film and get away from Tiffany and the goofy doll-family element. Maybe get back to Andy Barclay and a scarier tone. That's much more interesting to me than watching CHILD'S PLAY 1A.
That article even seems to indicate that they're not sure if Brad Dourif will be back as the voice of Chucky. I'm not one of those stupid humps that cried when Kane Hodder was replaced as Jason, but there should never be a Chucky movie without Dourif's voice coming out of that doll. Same with Englund and Freddy.
Speaking of Freddy, I wonder how long before an ELM STREET remake is announced. I'll eat my hat if it's not in the cards by next Halloween.
I hate to babble, but I have an irrational love for those four franchises, and it annoys me to see them all take Mulligans. I'll take even the crappiest sequels over any glossy reboots.

They should remake sequels as well. I'd pay to see a CHILD'S PLAY 2 remake. I think it'd be fun to start by remaking a sequel. Give everyone a new "Friday The 13th Part 3", title intact, and see if anyone cares that they "didn't see" the first two new ones.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/37997It's still a remake, but it's nice that Mancini is writing it and Dourif will still be voicing Chucky. I prefer this to another goofy "Chucky Family" sequel with Tilly (I love BRIDE, but SEED wore that element out), but I don't see the need to retell the origin. Just make a new movie with Chucky running amok. With these horror franchises, it's so easy to clear the slate without returning to Square One because no one expects crackerjack continuity from them. Uh nate. Yeah, but the Dawn remake is completely independent of that Night remake.

what a rollercoaster of emotion this thread has been,
Until I read the last post, I was convinced for some reason they were remaking Problem Child, and not "Childs Play"
I was exicted.
Now I dont care.
I am a huge horror buff.. Love all the sick shit. Miike, Aja, etc, but there was an event in my childhood that not only scarred me for life but also to this day prevents me from mentally preparing myself to see a childs play movie.
Cant do it. I can watch literally, the goriest, most fucked up horror films in the world, but the thought of watching that fucking puppet makes me queesy.
Im not sure how it started, but I remember vividly going to see Fantasia with my dad, seeing a poster for Childs Play 2 in the theater, going into panic attack mode and then weeping hysterically in my dads car as we drove away from fantasia, and the movie theater in general (Commack multiplex for those keeping score at home).
I realize in the realm of horror, Chucky is a joke... Just wish my brain could think that way.

My thing with Elm Street, Child's Play, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc is this:
These movies are all garbage.
But they scared us when we were young and stupid, so we might be more forgiving and remember them fondly. But think about Friday the 13th for a moment. That movie is unbearably bad and if you don't agree you are just a stinky liar, mister.
What's it been, thirty years? Could you imagine a teenager today actually being SCARED by that movie?
So what is the harm in remaking lame movies that scared us as lame movies to scare the little kids of today?
