THE MATRIX is great, but is it a controversial statement that the movie would have been even better if someone other than Keanu had played Neo? I even like Keanu, and think that his natural bemusement works better in that role than in a lot of other roles he's had, but I could never shake the feeling that, like, most other actors would have been an improvement over him.
The sequels sucked for a number of reasons, but the big one for me was that they don't really pay off the ending of the first one, with Neo as a force to be reckoned with against the machines. I didn't get why he still needed to engage them in hand-to-hand combat in RELOADED (I mean, other than that people would have been cheated out of seeing kung-fu). And the retcon of Morpheus being branded a loon by the rest of the survivors for believing in the prophecies and whatnot bugged me.
As for why the franchise died out, didn't the Wachowskis sort of keep it on a tight leash after the sequels came out? I always got the impression that the studio would probably love to do a million other things with THE MATRIX, but that the brothers didn't want to and had the juice to keep it left alone.

I think it's more a question of they over-saturated the market with two MATRIX sequels, a full-length anime, and a game all at once. So WB took a break, but my point is, no one's ASKING for more, no one's even talking about the movie.

I read that Will Smith turned down the role of Neo when it was offered to him. That would've been interesting to see.
I loaded ENTER THE MATRIX onto my computer but could never get it to work. Not only that, but when I tried to uninstall it, I kept getting error messages.

I just remember watching the sequels and thinking "I don't care about whatever this is" and that wasn't the case with the first one. I just turned off any interest.

I think The Matrix was different though. Part 2 was so, I guess alienating is the word, that I never really thought about it again. Often sequels are just ok to bad but this was something different. |

I'm with Dalton. I saw the second one in theaters, and I remember the fight on the highway, but that's literally it. I don't know anything else that happened in that movie. The third one was slightly more memorable, but by that point, my thoughts were "let's just get this over with...."
I still don't get why they were all rated R. I assume the first one was because it was post-columbine (or right around then, right?), but the sequels had nothing that I thought would've gotten them an R rating.

I think I finally checked out during the Zion rave/Neo-Trinity sex mash-up. That probably also got it the R rating.

Wasn't there a video game that kind of dovetailed with a scene from one of them? It's all coming back.
ENTER THE MATRIX was a sidestory that happened parallel to events in the sequel where you play as Jada Pinkett Smith. THE PATH OF NEO was a game that came later where you play as Neo in the events of all three movies with added events. At the end, the Wachowskis show up and say they were dissatisfied with the original ending and instead of Neo fighting Agent Smith one on one, he fights a giant Agent Smith comprised of all the Agent Smiths. |

I liked the final Neo v. Smith fight. It was like a Dragonball fight (a comparison I find favorable).

I'm pretty sure I played as a man in Enter The Matrix. That's the game that plays like a sloppy Max Payne clone isn't it? |
