It's a show about people who are essentially assholes. But so is ENTOURAGE.

So was THE SOPRANOS.

So is Curb your Enthusiasm.

OK, let's just say 90% of all HBO shows are centred around assholes. Don't get me started on that Sookie Stackhouse...

Nate Fischer wasn't an asshole. LOL.

Yeah, it's not that they're horrible but I think I'm over the tone.

Most everyone in GAME OF THRONES, too. Except for the little girl. Aaand, that's it; even the ones you like or root for are all pretty terrible people.

This is becoming one of my favorite shows. Thank goodness it's on HBO so it will get renewed no matter what.

Got picked up for season two today. So did VEEP. That's good.

I'm caught up too.  It's pretty great.  I wouldn't say "assholes" so much as "flawed", unlike all of us.

The show is so self-depreciating. How are people not charmed by this?

Wow. I was pretty on board until that third episode. It's like Cathy combined with MTV's Undressed with horrible acting.

And the parade of femme boys is the funniest part of the show.

I'm just saying ENTOURAGE or SOPRANOS or any other HBO show we like also centers around assholes/flawed people. It is only when they are all women that people get kind of "Hey, I don't know about these people!"

This show is everything SEX IN THE CITY is not. Which is to say, watchable.

The image of Lena Dunham as a live-action CATHY is now fixed in my mind forever.

That is making a very bad assumption about people. I will say there is a moment that happens in the coming weeks that made me realize that the people that run this show know what they're doing. The first few episodes are just so deeply enriched with hipsteritus, I didn't know which way was up.

I totally love 'Girls' but I do see where the surface-level backlash in coming from. While yes, all these prestige HBO shows are about horrible beyond (beyond 'flawed' I think), there's an initial attempt to make them all likable. The people who've made SEX IN THE CITY, SOPRANOS, ENTOURAGE, etc bend over backwards to get you to see where their main characters are coming from, and give you an "in" to understanding/empathizing with them, and GIRLS does none of that. In the first episode alone, Hannah is horrified by the thought of God forbid, having to work at McDonald's, and then steals a maid's tip (even after getting money from her parents). Lena Dunham seems to go out of her way to put that character at an arm's length from the audience.

I do think they've ALL softened a bit since that first episode (I actually really liked the Allison Williams plotline that you didn't buy), but what's funny is, the characters in the show remind me of the people I know who are like that; they kinda grate at first, but once you get to know them, you see they're not all that bad.
