I was just reading that back and forth on FB, Josh. Scary stuff. I feel like the pro-Zimmerman people and the pro...justice people are arguing past each other. Apparently a lot of right-wingers really do buy into the whole Dirty Harry thing, huh?

What's nuts is the leap where they don't realize they're either inventing a crime that the kid was committing, or excusing the notion that any black kid of a certain height, alone and unarmed and underage though he may be, is a de facto criminal and must be treated as such until proven otherwise. Or shot dead.

Times sure have changed. If 'Stand Your Ground' laws had existed in the 90's we would have never had CON AIR.

It showed me how easily led people are. I started posting about it pretty early on, and everyone seemed to agree with me that it was effed up that Zimmerman hadn't been arrested. But slowly, as the Hannitys and Limbaughs started spinning the story, they started talking about "Rush to judgement". "Judgement" isn't even the issue here. I don't know if he should be convicted, but I know he should have been changed. I don't know if Zimmerman is a racist, but I know that race must have been a factor in the decision not to charge him.

The thing I noticed is that the argument "the media should stop talking about this and let the courts handle it" is even more fallacious than it usually is, given that, if the media hadn't brought it up, it never would've gone to court.

Some people seem to think he's awaiting trial. NO! The outrage is because he hasn't even been charged! So frustrating.

Exactly! He's still free with his gun. The gun that killed Trayvon. That is beyond absurd.
I had a friend and the only story she posted about the case was a rumor that apparently Trayvon's mother had trademarked "I am Trayvon" and "Justice for Trayvon" and she was appalled that the mother was trying to profit from her dead son.
THAT'S what outraged about this entire ordeal.

Right. Or the people who are angry that Al Sharpton is holding rallies. A guy who killed a kid is walking free and you're all consumed with petty bullshit like that? The whole thing is bizarre to me.

I think this is the New Racism. Unlike using code words to "subtlely" convey a traditional racist sentiment, this is what has developed after a couple generations where it's no longer socially tolerable to be racist. Like, I don't think some people are doing this to hide their racism, I actually think that this is how racism is evolving and adapting to a "hostile" environment.

Please know that you are one of the fairest people I know. Or that you TRY to be, which is as much as can be hoped for. If I'm ever on trial, I want 12 of you in the jury box. This is the perfect summation of all the endless hours of commentary.

"You know whats fucked up? I see these pictures of a deformed Marine, a baby with cancer and other pictures of courage and strength and then I see a picture of Treyvon Martin and I'm thinking that he has absolutely fucking right being anywhere near any of these people. People are murdered, tortured and die in horrific ways each and everyday. That doesn't make them a hero it makes them a headline. Nuff Said. Gnite."
These are the things I keep seeing on my facebook. There was a huge argument I got in over someone that was pissed that Obama answered a direct question about it. I'm just hiding people from the news feed. Keeps me sane.
