You know, it's wild, it wasn't until 2008 (specifically the Obama victory) that I started to see how many people I am friends with on Facebook are racist.  It's wild.  Especially with me being all, you know... "not the picture of whiteness".  Fucked up thing though, is when I engage them in discussion, 70% of the time, they're not as much ignorant as they are misinformed.

Like with this case, I think there's a lot of people who think, with the police surveillance video, that Zimmermann is in custody. Or has been charged.  I can't tell you how many people have taken a position based on wrong facts on this.

You guys need to stop friending rednecks.

My friend who threw a shitfit over his mom "profiting from his death" is a 29 year old violinist in NYC,

She also threw a shitfit over the manufactured outrage when the charges of voter intimidation against the New Black Panthers were dropped. She insisted they were threatening voters who wouldn't vote Obama (despite any evidence they ever did that, and FoxNews showing up on the scene and not even making such a claim themselves at the time).

When I pointed out that charges were also dropped against a group of white guys getting in the faces of Hispanic-looking people and asking if they spoke English (oh, while carrying a gun in a holster), one of her friends had already stopped reading my comments and insisted it would have been different if they were white, and she insisted that it was different because there was nothing intimidating about what the white guys did; they have a right to carry a gun around and ask people questions.

We'd been "friends" for 8 or 9 years before I learned she was even remotely conservative, let alone consumed rightwing propaganda on a daily basis.

"I like you.  You just have that color I don't like"  "That's how I feel about you!"  Very funny.

Anybody that claims or implies in any way that Trayvon Martin deserved to die is out of my life permanently, without remorse.  DeFriend.  I lived in the heart of the Confederacy long enough to know when the KKK-sympathy talk starts, you get the fuck out of there.

Don't even argue with this level of racism.  X them.  They are hopeless and our only recourse in life is to outvote them.

Well, okay, I do think there is some value in sometimes telling a racist, "maybe that's your outlook on life and I feel sorry for you, but personally, I feel all people are equal and that no child deserves to die at the hands of a racist vigilante".  THEN X them and save yourself the heartbreak.

Said it at the time and I still feel it...

Obama's victory didn't prove America's not racist anymore.  It's proving how racist America still is.  Hate crimes and KKK (and other white-supremacy group) enrollment are both way up since 2008.  It has given them something to galvanize around.

The heartening thing is that his election proves that for the first time, these people are in the minority.  But that's what's making them so angry.

I guess I've lucked out in that I don't have any screwball conservatives on FB. The closest I have is my old boss, who doesn't care much for Obama, but doesn't make a federal case out of it. And even he's on the side of the angels on the Trayvon issue.

My family are pretty much the only conservative nuts I have on FB. I just scroll past their posts if they're talking politics.

My favorite part of the entire exchange with Josh was that the seventh post down starts with "I don't even HAVE to read this article to comment on it....." Not a good way to begin your argument.

This and alien Ninja Turtles are the reasons I have about 20 friends on FB.

I have NO clue what happened that day so I'm not saying a thing other than it's a shame that everyone is so focused on race and not on what actually happened.

He makes a pretty great bit out of that in his last album Mr P. It has some really funny, smart, outrageous comments on race, money and yes women.

Not tryin' to be a jerk, but I certainly hope you're not implying that the issues are of comparable importance or that you have comparable levels of emotional investment in both of them.

I think you're trying to be angry for anger's sake.

It was a reference to a previous post he made about ninja turtles. I'm pretty sure he meant it as a joke.

Why do you think I'm angry?  It's a very calm statement.  I don't understand the way you read things.  Do I need some kind of visual cue so that you know I'm not seething with rage or tearing my shirt off Hulk-style while typing?

Maybe not the funniest subject to joke about, then?

Still not seething with rage, to be clear.
