You pick the next one, too.  This was fun.

I found it hard to enjoy with DiCaprio's awful performance, and I usually like him in most things.

When the make-or-break performance in a period action movie starring Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu and Gabriel Byrne is that of Leonardo DiCaprio, you may be, as the kids say, "doing it wrong".

Wait, I've never seen BULLWORTH. Does he just rap the entire time?

Nah.  Watch it.

How would Warren Beatty even know?

I'll just pick whichever year SHAMPOO came out and assume he approves.

No.  Watch it, you'll like it.  I think getting all caught up in the rapping is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

SHAMPOO is amazing.  And on Netflix I believe.  Beatty does good work.

I like 'Shampoo' a whole bunch, but talk about vague political satire...

Prior to those clips, the only thing I previously knew about BULLWORTH was that joke from the series finale of THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW.

I went through a Beatty kick last summer and while I like him a lot, he's survived a lot of terrible work.

Did you make it to/through 'Reds'?  I was really impressed by that when I finally sat down to watch it, I thought he did a great job with the human side, the little character stuff, which usually suffers in epics like that.

I disagree with this.  SHAMPOO is brilliant as well.

I never knew there were people who hated BULWORTH.  Hm.

REDS has come in through Netflix a few times but I never pull the trigger. I think I'm close though.

I feel like it was trying to say something with all the Nixon stuff, beyond just setting the time-and-place, but I honestly don't know what.  It's a great movie, though.  I just kind of wrote that Nixon stuff off as an Altman-esque thruline (you know, like the campaign truck in 'Nashville' or the loudspeaker in 'MASH' or the Leonard Cohen stuff in 'McCabe').  But I think if the politics of 'Bulworth' are too vague, than the politics of 'Shampoo' will be bafflingly opaque.

Yeah, 'Reds' was the first movie I returned to Netflix without watching.  At least once.  It's tough to set aside enough time for the movie -- but I will say, it's a much breezier sit than most movies of that length.  It wasn't the ponderous thing I was expecting; it has its flaws, but he puts a really interesting spin on it.  It's pretty good.

Again, it's been a while since I've seen it but I took it as being about the end of the 60's and any idealism associated with it.  As Nixon is elected George's life falls apart.  That coupled with the subtle hints about the Manson killings (10 months away) make it pretty dark satire.
