GREEN ARROW, didn't like.
Has there been in a good Green Arrow in years? The last run I remember really really loving was Smith > Meltzer, but everything after that was dull. I'd check in every once in a while to see because I love the character but wound up disappointed every time. The wedding special was really fun, but beyond that everything was a resounding "meh." The lone exception being Jock/Diggle's Green Arrow: Year One, which was really great. Why they don't let those guys take over is beyond me.

THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN # 1
Pros: His redesign is okay.
Cons: Story is bad, art is bland. Villains look and act like Venom. It starts out with the guy saying "I'll never be Hawkman" when he's on the cover being Hawkman. Last page cliffhanger is dumb. This was very bad, which kinda sucks because the character can be cool.

ALL-STAR WESTERN # 1
Pros: Really cool, sepia toned art. It's western that takes place in Gotham City, that is a great concept. Well written.
Cons: Not really my thing. It's very well done, but not a huge fan of western comics, and not a fan of the lead (Jonah Hex).
GRADE: B
GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS # 1
Pros: Cool concept, fun story. My favorite of the Green Lantern related books. This really surprised me.
Cons: Rebooting Kyle Raynor but none of the other Green Lanterns is a weird choice. But this was good, for sures.
GRADE: B+
JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK # 1
Pros: Great cover (Ryan Sook), fun concept (a super hero team consisting of all the weirder, magic characters in the DCU), creepy fun stuff.
Cons: Nothing really. Not perfect, and magic stuff can get muddled REALLY quickly, but this issue was fun.
GRADE: B+

I read BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT and SUPERMAN and they were both pretty bad. I liked the end of Superman, though. Batman's ending was weird and stupid.

AQUAMAN #1
Christ, this comic. Don't tell me Aquaman is shitty after I've had to pay £2.35 to read about him, fuckers! Art was good, but nothing about the story made me want to buy the next issue. Hated the bit in the middle where the guy says 'Hey, I've got a blog, let me read your backstory to you!' Also, annoying that Geoff Johns had to slip in his trademark hokey-superhero-flashback scene where Aquaman's dad tells young Aquaman that being a lighthouse keeper is super important because blah blah blah with great power comes great responsibility.
JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1
I liked this one. Art felt a little soft, but was mostly fine (and it might be that I'm just still getting used to Constantine looking so fresh-faced). Weird that it had scenes with the Superman / Batman / Wonder Woman team than JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 did, but oh well, that's comics. Anyway, it had some cool creepy scenes and managed to establish a reason for the team existing (i.e. because Superman is rubbish at fighting magic). Still not sure how the dynamic will work between all these weirdo characters but I'm feeling more optimistic about it now.
Still to come: ALL STAR WESTERN and FIRESTORM. Sorry, THE FURY OF FIRESTORM. Why is he furious? I'll find out soon, fury-fans!

JONAH HEX #1
It was alright. I liked the art and 1800s Gotham, but I'm fairly fed up of reading first issues that are full of captions which endlessly hammer home what the main character is all about. 'After studying Jonah Hex, I conclude that he is a pretty tough guy who doesn't say much but is also probably okay in a sort of jerky kind of way but JEEZ that face of his'.
THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1
Lots of good character stuff. The Hulk-Firestorm is pretty lame and makes me less interested in the series though, he doesn't really feel at all necessary when there's already an interesting dynamic between the two main characters. He certainly is furious though, so there is that.

SECOND ISSUE BONANZA
ANIMAL MAN and ACTION comics are both still really good. Grant Morrison's Lex Luthor is so much fun to read and Jeff Lemire is great at fleshing out characters and relationships and then putting them into really creepy situations.
SWAMP THING was decent but I've already forgotten a lot of it. OMAC was fine, but it's nuts.

Morrison has his finger on the pulse of something with his wacky theories. His book talked about the cyclical nature of the need for certain incarnations of heroes/gods, and that the "socialist Superman" of the late 30s who fought the monied interests, on the side of the little guy was coming around again. He predicted a groundswell of populism against corporate interests, and saw the time for Superman to return to the aspect of that Golden Age incarnation(rough and non-boyscout, taking matters into his own hands, being an anti-corruption force more than a cosmic traffic cop) as arriving again.

I bet he saw himself as writing the apex of the Superman-as-cosmic-force story with All-Star Superman. He wouldn't be wrong, really.

I have a collection of the old strips and it's really interesting how different he's handled early on. He's much more of an ass-kicker and a social crusader, helping out the little guy. I'm glad they're bringing back that aspect. It serves the character well.

What's neat is that Morrison kind of called that as a zeitgeist-moment on the horizon in his book; about how he expects a moment and a movement of people in the streets against corporate greed and big-money, which was the mood when Superman came out. I honestly dismissed his talk there as being too much in his head and over-thinking stuff. But the guy's got a method to his madness.
