Books 4 and 5 would be much better if condensed into one book like they were supposed to be. The deal called for 7 books instead of the 5 he planned, so he stretch book 4 into two. And they read that way. Not a whole lot happens because it's all set up for book 6. It two whole books of getting all the pieces to the place they need to be.

Well, on the upside, I don't see that they'll have any choice but to combine book 4 and 5 for the series (though perhaps it'd stretch into two seasons, but maybe not if they're not all that heavy on plot). Unless they want to have several major characters missing for an entire season.

Right, but I'm sure they will split it into 2 seasons. One of the books (3 maybe) was going to be split into 2 seasons. Then they are screwed. No way RR will have the next book done in time and even if he pulls that off. He's never going to have book 7 done in time.

I'm actually almost up to the end of book 3 -- have another 200 pages or so to go -- so I might know what you mean, but truth be told, there's a LOT of stuff in that book/series that's going to be amazing. It's the best one so far IMO. (General attitude seems to be that books 4/5 are relative disappointments by comparison)
Katy, can I make a suggestion for when you read books 4 & 5? The way I did it was, rather than reading all of book four, I wanted to find out what happens with Jon and Tyrion and Daenarys, so I read both books simultaneously. I started with the first chapter of book four, then read the first chapter of book five, and alternated like that. It makes book four easier to get through (which is mostly Cersei, Jaime, and Brienne, with some Arya and Sansa and Samwell thrown in for good measure). The only things I noticed that mess this up are that there is a scene in book four from Samwell's perspective that has a conversation with Jon, and we see the exact same conversation from Jon's perspective in book five. I skipped over it because I had literally just read it. The other thing is that there's a storyline in the two books that takes place in Dorne and concerns a couple of POV characters, one being Areo Hotah and the other being Arianne Martell. The storyline picks up in the middle of book five, but you'll not yet have read the end of the storyline from near the end of book four. I had to go back to book four and catch up, but it was only about three or four chapters before I could go back to alternating.

I hope that the show is enough incentive for him to finish the books in a timely fashion. If they split "A Storm of Swords" into two seasons and "A Feast for Crows"/"A Dance with Dragons" into three seasons, it's possible that he could get them both out before they have to film it. But either way, he works closely with the producers of the show and writes one episode per season. Even if he can't get the books out on time, he could tell them exactly what he plans for the end of the saga and let them do it their own way.

Over in the no-spoilers thread, they are discussing major deaths, and how they tend to occur in the second half of the seasons. I read all the books over the course of a few months so they all kinda blend together, but what major deaths do we still have to look forward to this year, after Renly who died this week?
I thought ...........Joffrey's death was this year, but now I think that's in book three. Do any major characters die in book two?

I can't imagine they would put out the series before the book

I thought the Red Wedding was in the next book, but I've heard people say it was this season. Too lazy to look it up right now

No, the Red Wedding is definitely in book three. I believe it takes place during the titular storm of swords.

It makes book four easier to get through (which is mostly Cersei, Jaime, and Brienne, with some Arya and Sansa and Samwell thrown in for good measure). I'll probably try for this. I end up reading ahead (or back) for some characters anyway, as it is, b/c in some books certain characters have a super-exciting story from the jump and some are kind of treading water, so I end up reading ahead on say, Danaerys because that's so interesting and I HAVE TO KNOW, and meanwhile kind of skimming through, say, Catelyn's chapters, but then something insane happens to Catelyn on page 800 so I have to go back and read more thoroughly. Your method sounds good. I'll give it a go.

I'll have to try a reread using this method. I quite liked Book 4 even though it was less action packed than SoS.

I posted in the other thread about this, but I think when I re-read the series again (probably once they announce a release date for "The Winds of Winter"), I think what I might do is read each character's story from beginning to end. So, like, start on book one with Bran and read all the Bran chapters through book five in order, then go back to the beginning and read all the Ned chapters in order, etc. Might be interesting although the guest-POVs in books four and five present a problem, whether to read those individually or lump them in with other characters. The Barristan/Quentyn chapters at the end of book five, for example, should probably go with the Daenarys chapters.

SPOILERS SPOILERS WANTON SPOILERS WAY FAR AHEAD SPOILERS
OMG I finished Book 3 and I finally figured out the deal with the wight (presumably? blue-eyed and cold in any case) dude that brings Gilly and Sam to the secret door in the Wall. (Also, I love the secret door.) It's Benjen Stark, right?
That was driving me crazy.

No confirmation of that so far but it's a popular theory.
So, what was your reaction to The Red Wedding?
