I don't know how to feel about Wii U. I was so excited about Wii and so gradually but completely let down by it. I hope it is good. What do you think?

The prospect of new gaming consoles bums me out because I'm about to enter the student loan age of my life which means I'll have no money to spend on anything I like.

I dig the hell out of it. So many possibilities.

Seems cool, but it puts the onus on Nintendo for 1st party games and they only make so many of them. Developers in 3rd party companies would have to spend a lot of resources to projects that could never be ported.

How much will an extra controller cost? And would little kids break them easily? I also think the big N is crazy in the same way that it was crazy in making the 64 cart based in not committing to a big online component.

I can't see this succeeding, honestly. It looks cool as hell, yeah, in the right, revolutionary hands, but just unwieldy to design for, gameplay-wise for most outfits. The screen is going to end up as an inventory manager for most games, I bet.

The Wii managed to get by almost exclusively on gimmick, at least at first, but I think Nintendo has now desensitized people to those sorts of gimmicks, so I don't see this being nearly as successful, not to mention that's a really unwieldy controller.

I think if the controller is able to be independent of the console, it could have potential to revolutionize the industry. I'm talking about being able to load a portion of the game into the controller, take it with you, and essentially have a Wii/Nintendo DS hybrid where you can play part of the game at home on the flatscreen and then continue playing on a bus. I had an idea for a game like that ten years ago when they came out with the GameCube/GBA connector, where you could play an RPG on the GameCube and then load your characters into the GBA and level them up on the go. That way when you come back to the GameCube you could continue with the adventure and not have to waste time leveling up. Unfortunately nothing like that ever happened.

However, if I had to guess I'd say that the controller has no internal memory and merely runs the game via Bluetooth from the console. In other words, you'd have to stay within a hundred feet or so of the console, and once it turns off, the controller turns off as well.

Your all just cynical assholes (South Park reference)

But seriously.  Wii is and has been primarily a game system for kids.  My kids love it, EVERY kid I know has it and loves it.  This new one will be no different.  Kids will love it.  Older people will think it's shit (It's like south Park was talking about this board)

I think rather than being a system for kids, a better description of it would be a gaming console for casual gamers. Other than a handful of first-party Nintendo games, almost all the games made for Wii are for people who don't play hardcore games. Personally I have the Wii just for first-party Nintendo games, as I cannot live without my Mario and Zelda fix. But ever since the N64, this has been what Nintendo is about... loads of shitty games with the occasional first-party masterpiece.

Sure it's for casual gamers too, but PRIMARILY it's for kids.  Just look at the game catalog.  I would say 85% are title aimed SOLELY towards kids under 15.

Right. And with the Kinect, they no longer have the market cornered on gimmick/novel interfaces.

Right. Which is why making an expensive, breakable, screen-in-unit controller seems an odd choice.

I think there is a lot of potential for this system and controller, however, I also think its going to be crazy expensive to replace the controllers. Here's an example of some of the cool things that can be done with the controller.
