Without a shadow of a doubt.

then somehow you'll be right to violate her privacy and tarnish her legacy for money and then pretend you're doing something good. If I understand the other poster's point.

I actually think the notion of not "selling out" with this sort of stuff is antiquated. The guy left a daughter to be raised with a lunatic, mess of a mom and no dad and only whatever the songs he made in a few years could bring in for the rest of her life. At that point, I'd sell everything he had or did to go into the Frances Bean fund.

The only selling out I really care about anymore is when someone does something they've explicitly come out against.  That's truly selling out to me.  Oh, or completely changing your art just to make it.  But I don't consider that selling out... just pandering.

I don't think you are a jerk at all. But keep in mind you also don't know my wife or of her professional status.

Forgive me for making the wild assumption that your wife is probably not as famous as Kurt Cobain.

Yeah, I agree.

For me it's just that this is how Kurt left it.  On some level, he must have wanted it that way.  I grow weary of Grohl and Novoselic hemming and hawing about how little control they have over Nirvana's legacy because they certainly didn't complain about the arrangement when Kurt was alive.  People act like he just accidentally forgot to give them writing credits or songrights on 98% of the band's output.  Not true.  For whatever reasons, greed or simple accuracy to whom had done the work, he kept credit for himself.

He also didn't die in an accident and it's not accidental that he didn't leave a will.  He was no fool.  He knew Courtney would be the executor.  People want somehow to ascribe different motives or intentions to him than he had.  The simple truth is that he kept the lion's share of credit to himself, deliberately, and deliberately left everything to Courtney to handle (which was rather cruel, in a way).  I certainly wouldn't claim she's done a great job of handling the estate -- and hell, she's frittered away her own musical legacy, to boot -- but again, this is how the deceased wanted it.

At a certain point, it just boils down to arguing with a dead man about his choice in bride which seems kind of pointless to me.

Firstly, I don't think you really mean that they "hemmed and hawed"- that would mean they stammered as a delaying tactic while they thought of something to say.  Second, I don't think you can find a single quote of either Krist or Dave complaining about not controlling Nirvana's legacy.  Find me a quote.  You can't BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Courtney Love is sick, paranoid addict.  She spends hours and days and years talking about how everyone from David Geffen to Dave and Krist to Jim Barbour stole money from her.  But it never happened.  Meanwhile she has a daughter who had to get a restraining order against her lest she kill any more of the family pets.   She is out of her mind and has been for 20 years, but you have this knee jerk action to defend her because she's a woman.

And yeah, Kurt "chose" her when he was out of his mind on heroin, but she totally betrayed him by selling his journals.  He never would have wanted those published.

Not to speak for her, but I don't think katy's defended Courtney in any way; she's repeatedly said Courtney's a basket case. I think her point is that regardless, Courtney has more right to speak on Cobain's wishes than Dave or Krist do, is all.

Okay, how about "carried on".

You mean they never sued her or issued an open letter to Nirvana fans claiming that Nirvana was "their" music and attacking her personally and viciously?

Actually, I haven't defended her at all, in this thread or elsewhere.  What I've actually said is, if you would read it, that she is a hot mess, that her statement on the Muppets matter means nothing since she's sold her rights away, that who knows what state of mind she's in, and that she hasn't handled his legacy well.

You simply assume I am defending her because she is a woman and I am a feminist and you have knee-jerk ideas about feminists.  So who's zoomin' who?  All I'm saying is that again, like it or not, this is what Kurt wanted.

Probably shouldn't have left her as his executor then.

Exactly, thanks.  100%.

A court case that was settled over 10 years ago.  Not a single word from them since then.  How can you be sick of them carrying on?  It makes no sense.   Meanwhile she rants like a lunatic on a nightly basis about Dave and Krist.  A sick woman who shouldn't be allowed to control a bicycle let alone the Nirvana catalog.

There are lots of people who are not good or wise people, who happen to be next of kin to a dead copyright owner of great work.  While it may not seem fair, until science figures out a way to help geniuses live forever (especially when they are inclined to eat a rifle), that is just the way it is.

In any case, she has sold her rights away so I don't even know why we're having this conversation.  I'm not even sure why anyone took her statement on this more seriously than any other ravings of a madwoman.

(BTW, are you a Salinger fan?  If so, we'll have a hoot arguing when the kids start digging through his files for truffles.)
