I did notice that, yeah. Asked my wife, she was like "nah". I was like "totally".
Okay, glad I'm not the only one. I asked my friend and he was like "What the hell is a hidden mickey??" and then as I started to explain it I felt like the world's biggest nerd. |

I also really enjoyed Gary, Mary and Walter, especially Life's A Happy Song. I fully expect it to get nominated, and will be very frustrated should that not happen. As far as the human characters go, I thought they were made more important to the plot than the human romance in Muppets Take Manhattan but I didn't think it was an inappropriate thing.
I also actually loved the way they re-contextualized We Built This City. And if you listen to the verses and think about the movie, it's kind of uncanny in places. I like the track a lot more now than I did before...

We Built This City was great. But I feel like the missed a joke opportunity where it should've come from pressing play on 80's Robot.
Jesus... I can't believe I forgot. 80's Robot was the greatest thing in the entire movie to me. Matter of fact... it was probably the most Lynch-y non-Lynch character in a movie ever.

That's so true! 80's Robot is VERY Lynchian (the Brian variety, not David). That modem gag especially makes me laugh hard.

I'm definitely in the Walter/Gary/Mary camp. They were great characters and a perfect through line to the Muppets later on.
Plus, it's sort of original, isn't it? There's hardly any other franchise that you can do this sort of metacontexual fan fiction type thing with, where you DIRECTLY tie in the both the public's perception of the franchise and the main character's viewpoints. You've always had the Muppets as very fourth wall breaking as characters, so after 40+ years of history it stands to reason that you could easily work in characters who represent US, the fans.
Again, I can't think of any other franchise who is capable of this, and I think Segel and Co. should be commended for their originality.
Also, I just added "Muppets" and "metacontexual" to my web browser's dictionary. No more wavy red lines for me!

I thought 80s Robot was very Jordyian.
I also said WE BUILT THIS CITY should have been coming from 80s Robot, but even better would have been the Electric Mayhem singing an original song. They needed one.
