It's absolutely terrifying and unfathomable. The footage doesn't seem real in some of those aerials of the waves lurching over the coast. Power plants shut down, that oil refinery on fire. A few friends of mine have been trying to contact relatives in northern Japan but all the lines are down right now.

ALSO, I saw on Twitter that an unofficial watch has been raised for California. Stay safe, everyone out that way! Just in case.

A little more info on the west coast estimates: http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2011/03/11/lhvpd9/01/webetalhvpd9-01.txt

I know a ton of people over there and I'm kind of losing my mind with worry because I have no idea how I'll contact most of them.

holy shit. That footage of the big black waves of water and debris looks like CGI.

I tivo the Rachel Maddow show and it was pre-empted for coverage by the standard news people. They had someone on the phone who turned out to be a fake Capt. Janks style caller claiming to be in Japan, who, amidst this footage, said, "I have not seen that kind of wave action. We need someone who can fix the PARKS AND RECREATIONS here like BABA-BOOEY. WINNING!!"

I couldn't believe how it looked. The debris-monster just rolling across the land like that. I mean, there was a *burning building* that was being carted along like a kid's toy. Insane.

Everybody here who lives in a place with high tectonic activity should organize drills and keep plenty of water, food, radio, flashlights, batteries. Seems like every place is being hit.
