If you're in the tri-state area check this one out. Try to do it soon though because most of the original cast and Billie Joe Armstrong are leaving at the end of February and American Idol's Justin Guarini is taking over a role (and the lead singer of AFI is replacing Billie Joe as St. Jimmy). I wasn't sure how the album would translate but it turns out that something about the music made it quite adaptable to the stage. Not much of a story really but the staging, music and choreography are top notch. And St. Jimmy's entrance is pretty damned exciting. Fun as hell.

I wonder how many singers dream of being able to act out their lyrics like that.
unrelated edit:
I was surprised by how many opportunities BJA and the other guy had to injure themselves, running and jumping on the catwalks like that. at least Spider-Man gives its actors wires.

I kinda wonder if he wrote it with an eye towards having it performed as a play, and if he kinda knew St. Jimmy would be his part. The song is very theatrically written with the dramatic entrance, and the "My name is St. Jimmy I'm a son-of-a-gun" thing; very, um, Broadway-ish.

The album was touted as a concept album/punk-rock opera basically from day one, so I'm sure he had hoped for a production of some kind to be mounted.

Funny it took 25 years for them to do TOMMY on Broadway. AI took, what? Six?

The original Green Day album won a Grammy, the musical has won Tonys, the musical's cast recording won a Grammy... Maybe Billie Joe is hoping to EGOT.

Had that ever been done at all before Tommy?

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and EVITA were concept albums before they were on stage, but they were written specifically for the stage. But no, as far as I know no rock group ever had an album made into a Broadway musical before TOMMY.

For some reason, this really shocks me. I can't imagine it that way, yet it does kind of explain why the songs work so well as just songs.

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/american-idiot-to-close/The good news is Billie Joe is coming back... Last week, following Mr. Armstrong’s departure from his latest stint as St. Jimmy, “American Idiot” saw a mammoth drop in its box office grosses, falling from $1.3 million to $395,275. While many musicals and plays saw a drop-off in ticket sales last week — partly because the previous week included a holiday and school vacations — “American Idiot” declined the most by far.
