This is a downside to comic-book things going mainstream. "Make sure you bring your gun and karate,Scarlett Johansson!"

Hearing the old tropes of tired comic book nerds get re-discovered by idiots. Wait until these fellas figure out that Superman's jizz would totally shoot through Lois Lane's back. And HEY, can that Mr. Fantastic make EEEVERYthing stretch, or what?

Also, note there's only this scorn for girls. Non-powered super-heroes who are just kick-ass agents get a pass if they're dudes: Batman, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, etc.

That's the comic book world. Nobody bats an eye when a peak-human-condition athlete with a shield withstands a hammer-blow from a GOD, but if a girl does martial arts and has a gun, it's CRAZY to suspend your disbelief that she can hold her own.

While I agree with most of what you said, you must not have been looking because Hawkeye was Internet snark'd just as much as Black Widow. Also, the peak human condition athlete thing for Cap is really selling short the affects of the super soldier serum.

I was glad when they showed Captain America using firearms during WW2.  I was worried they were going to tone it down for the movie.   It would have been silly to have him taking out entire army units by, essentially, hitting them.

Speaking of...

During the 'Roast of Batman' episode of Brave & Bold I was suddenly struck by the ridiculousness of the whole idea of fighting crime with punching.   When Bats crashes the party, all these buffoonish supervillains -- looking more like feeble old men than ever -- start running around in a panic and he grabs them one by one and socks each in the face.   I got no problem with violence in the media or anything, but in that moment it seemed not only unnecessarily brutal but really inefficient.   This billionaire detective seriously hasn't come up with a better way to subdue and restrain someone than beating them til they lose consciousness?

But if he beats them until they're unconscious, at least they stop with the puns.

Man, I'd forgotten that part --   Batman starts doing lousy one liners while he beats them.   And they stand there flinching while waiting for him to get the whole joke out then punch them.    It almost felt sadistic.    I felt like the kid at the Krusty Burger grand opening, watching Homer thrash the Krusty Burglar.   "Stop! Stop! He's already dead!"

The idea of Jeffrey Ross kicking Joker in the face was kinda funny, though.

Thy are sayin that Ben Kingsley is playing The Mandarin. I always thought they were going to reveal that Yensin didn't die and was in fact, The Mandarin.

The Marvel Roleplaying game seems to back you up:

When I was at the Kubert School, a teacher who had been an editor at Marvel brought in a photocopy of some of Romita Jr.'s pencils. They would be considered roughs for most artists, the preliminary "blocking-in" stage before you go in over it with finished pencils. I think any piece of his artwork you see from the last ten or fifteen years is probably 20% him and 80% his inker.

So, that wasn't the Iron Patriot... it's supposedly a stuntman in the War Machine suit that has been painted to be more patriotic by the US gov't.

But more important...

They'll steer clear of MODOK in the film universe, right?  Because I'm all for really comicy stuff in these movies, but that I think might be too far.

I dunno much about AIM or MODOK, but having looked it up on Wikipedia, I found a list of the three inventions AIM created. The first was the cosmic cube, the third was MODOK, but the second...

Quote
The second was the Super-Adaptoid, an android capable of mimicking the appearance and superpowers of other beings. The Super-Adaptoid's powers were made possible by incorporating a sliver of the Cosmic Cube into its form. When Kubik repossessed the sliver after defeating the Adaptoid, the android was rendered inanimate.

This seems far more likely to be the story in the first follow-up movie to THE AVENGERS.
