This is a leap.  How could you know this?

Put all your natural contrarianism aside - do you REALLY feel that he thought that by doing this, he was going to make his roommate's life better?

I never said that.  But it could have been just a kind of misguided "bonding" prank.  They're 18.  They don't know shit about shit.

I just keep going back to this sentence you typed:

Quote
What if, to the perpetrator, the fact that his roommate was with a guy was no big deal?

And, in all seriousness, I wish I could believe it. I really do.

But I don't.

I don't know exactly what was in his mind or what went on.

But I looked at that picture of the victim again and this one is just way too sad to argue about.  Hopefully at the very least this story makes kids think twice about this kind of stuff.

These aren't children - these are grown adults who are attending college. And as for the "Young People Don't Understand Privacy the Way We Do" I'd wager that that kid at some point in his high school career had to sit through a Cyber-Bullying Assembly or Presentation.

This was a criminal act, and it should be treated as such. A lot of people do shitty things as "harmless pranks," but that doesn't mean that what they do is somehow exempt for consequences for their actions.

I'd feel the same way, by the by, if the guy didn't kill himself - but then again, if he didn't kill himself, it wouldn't be a story, and we wouldn't be talking about it.

All I'm gonna say is that I remember my first few months at Emerson when I was 18 and I was very far from being a grown adult.

I can't see how this wasn't malicious. Unless the guy was comfortably out and open about his sexuality, which if he killed himself because that became public he clearly wasn't. Recording anyone without them knowing doing anything is insanely creepy though, even as a joke. The perpetrator should be sent to a prison island of some kind.

Sure. And there are also many 18-year olds who go to school and work jobs, or go to school and take care of their children. There are also 18-year olds who don't go to school, work full-time, fight in wars, etc. etc. I don't think the fact that this kid suffered from arrested emotional development means he shouldn't be punished for what he did.

I also presume that none of your 18-year old actions caused anybody public embarrassment or, you know, death.

It's funny how liberals become Nixon/Rockerfeller law and order types.

Again I'm interested to hear the whole story.  I certainly feel horrible for the victim, his family, and the perpretrator's family at this point.  You think college is the start of your life, and then this happens.

I'm very conservative about crime. I feel like crimes should not be committed. I fully admit this is weird.

It's funny how you're only interested in the shades of grey in cases where it serves your argument.

I can't think of a single variable that could change the broad strokes of this story.

I can't believe I managed to make it out of college without secretly videotaping someone and releasing it publicly. There but the grace of god. My heart goes out to those who weren't so lucky.
