Come on, their defense strategy, in its entirety, was to call friends of his father, all of whom testified that they're sure he's not a homophobe, even though they had never once talked to him about homosexuality.
This was not Perry Mason for the defense.

That's because guys like Perry Mason won't take cases that they absolutely can't win, when the actual case itself is already basically decided before it starts by the facts, and the entire thing will come down to just whether the judge feels merciful or not in the sentencing. I agree, they're not great lawyers, but I don't think they're exceptionally incompetent, I think they had literally no case to mount.

She heard during the trial that Ravi had not reached out to her son on Facebook or via email, but, rather, had used his computer skills to plug Clementi's email address into various computer programs to discover what websites he frequented and to discover that Tyler was gay. Seriously? That happened? So they hardly interacted, but he used the guy's email to pry into his internet habits? That's fucked up.

I don't like the kid, but I don't see anything particularly wrong with Googling somebody that you're going to live with.

I don't like the way the author put it (obviously he or she doesn't know *exactly* what the guy did) but it sounded like it was more than a simple googling.

It seems like, if the reporter actually wanted to find out, they could look in the court record, instead of paraphrasing something that the mother says. I think her point about what he found is true, and is the bad part about what Ravi did. And it sounds as if everything he found could've been found via Google.

You can find out what sites a person frequents just by googling their name? Really? All I find when I google myself (just did it, first time in years I swear) is what social networks I belong to and how many of me there are in my home state. I mean, I guess you know what sites I frequent in the sense that I frequent those social networking sites, but...

You can when their name is the name that they use to post on message boards. EDIT: I remember that because it was a big counter-argument to the narrative that Tyler was in the closet.

This woman named Kandice on Josh's old cat's ass board did that to me and posted some semi personal information. It was creepy yeah.

Oh, OK, I see now. It's still kinda weird. The most "internet intel" I ever do on a person I know is looking them up on Facebook.

30 days is a pathetic sentence. I was also unmoved by his crocodile tears. This kid is the worst.

I think this is just; he didn't kill the kid. Anyone who has ever spent 4 hours in a jail knows that 30 days is a long taste of hell. I think that this kid is a jerk, but I also think the kid who killed himself is largely responsible for killing himself, and something of an asshole for doing it. I don't see any heroes in this story.
