If you read all 47 pages of the thread, Dalton's series of comments that essentially boil down to "Ah, boys will be boys!" and your "There are no innocent parties" comment from earlier today seemingly placed a fair share of the blame on Clementi simply not having a sense of humor and being a big wuss who took the coward's way out..

I disagree with your interpretation. I think people here are aware of the hideousness of the crime and the need for the one responsible to be held accountable. I also agree Ravi seems to act out with pretty antisocial conducts i.e. he's a somewhat evil creep. Regardless of that (which is not illegal in itself), I think 30 weeks (I think given the profile of the case, it'd probably be reduced but also not by much) and the six months of full time volunteer work and having to deal with probation for 3 years is a lenient sentence but enough of a humbling experience to make him an example and also deterring him from invading anyone elses privacy in the near future, especially since there's no proof the spying was done to find sexual gratification, something that is much more heavily punished.

Whoa dude.  This is a very simplistic (and stupid) interpretation of what I said about the case.

So, nobody's capable of change or just the people you want to like, since we're hyperbolizing and all?

No, my statement was meant to be taken at simple face value.  There is no need to project sarcasm upon me; I pretty much say exactly what I mean.

You either need to learn how to articulate yourself better, or enroll into your local community college's Self Awareness 101 summer program, because your default response to everything, ever is: "The victim is to blame, and is totally whining about being a victim, and didn't everybody grow up with the same heartless assholes that I did?"

In fairness, Dalton, you do pretty often use reasoning along these lines.  Or "Kids I grew up with did worse," that sort of thing.  I sometimes wonder, when topics of this nature come up, if you grew up on Lord of the Flies island.

Bullshit.  That is not at all my default response to anything, and  I've never said anything remotely like that about Tyler Clementi.  Ever.  Maybe you should enroll in your local community college's reading comprehension class.

The one thing I got in re-reading this thread (not the WHOLE thing, because my god) is that there's a tendency all too often to jump on one another with a HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY BE SO AWFUL with a snarky, clever quip attached to it than to actually have a discussion with one another.

Because it's easier for some to think that Dharun Ravi is an evil caricature who bullied Tyler Clementi to death and broadcast his intimate moments to the campus.  Unfortunately the facts of the case get in the way and it's hard for some people to grasp what a common and ordinary situation this was up until the moment of Tyler's tragic suicide.  So they attack me personally rather than argue the facts of the case, which they'd lose on.

Simply because a crime is common doesn't make it any less of a crime.  Indeed, it makes it all the more worthy of prosecution, so that our cultural awareness of how serious and damaging such crimes are can develop and grow and lead to better education.

I've had this same response to this "boys will be boys!  Hazing is fun!  You're damn right I ordered the Code Red!" justification ever since page 1 of this thread and I can't state it any more simply than that.

It doesn't matter how common harassment or spying or hating on gay people are, they are still wrong.  It's not up to the victim to toughen up, it's up to the perpetrator to not harass or spy or hate on people.

You're straw manning me so I can't really even respond.

I never once said a word about Tyler Clementi having to "toughen up".  That would be idiotic.  You wish it was all that simple so you choose to believe that's what I said, but I never did.  Or would.

Kate would you still advocate for a 12 month sentence if Tyler hadn't commited suicide?

You think she's gonna say "no" at this point?

If i drive drunk and don't hit somebody, should I get the same sentence that I would get if I drove drunk and hit someone?

This is a lot more of an interesting moral question than you're giving it credit for being.
