Is the View Askew board gone?

It did, but the problem with that seemed to have been that people assumed that since they paid 2 dollars, they had a right to be there and post whatever they wanted, no matter how offensive to others.

The worst were people who would use the, "Kevin's movies have donkey shows and poop monsters!" defense to post rape jokes and fisting .gifs.

The only thing that changed was that a bunch of assholes didn't mind spending two bucks, and Kevin wasn't around enough to notice just how assholish they were being.

I actually hadn't been back there for over a month, two major reasons being the entitled babies in the Den thread and the repugnant weirdos in the LOW threads.  So I completely agree with those things as reasons to clean house.

I can't say I thought much of the warning from Kevin that Hawk quoted, though.  You can't state which of the SModcast Podcasts you like best, because that's pitting the shows against each other?  Really?  You're not allowed to say anything critical about any of those shows, because they're free?  I'm honestly not 100% sure how I feel about that.  Seems excessive.

To answer an earlier post from AsianPersuasion, yes, ViewAskew fans are the scum of the earth. That's what you get when you give your fans a forum, when you care about them more than the next famous guy - you get to hear how full of shit they are and you get to see how pathetic they are and you get to see how they use you in their own sad little publicity battles. In fact that's why most of these famous fuckheads don't bother - they'll sign a picture sure, but everything else gets handled by PR, and rightly so, cos people are fucking idiots. It's not worth the pain and embarrasment.

Fame makes fuckers of us all, I swear. It makes fuckers of the fans who will literally do anything to get noticed by their idol. It makes fuckers of other fans, who see a certain type of fan behaving a certain type of way, and they'll sneer cos they just happen to be better informed fans and therefore so much cleverer. It makes fuckers of the people who should know better, cos the attention, once you've had it, gets hard to ignore, and it makes fuckers of the famous cos you can't please even half of the people half of the time, no matter how you present yourself.

The way I see it, the small time TV celebrities and the Britney Spears' of this world deserve everything they get. The stalkers, the threats, the fans - the whole thing. But you can't avoid that sort of shit in the public eye, no matter who you are. Kevin is hardly Britney Spears, and you can bet the View Askew publicity machine has less wheels than hers. He doesn't ask for respect, he earns it as a byproduct of making intelligent movies - he doesn't promise to be all things to all people, he's just himself. And it's not like his fans are screaming teenagers waving pictures around (OK, not all of them) - most of you guys are intelligent, literate people who feel an affinity with the man through his films, not just cos he's flavour of the month, and yet he still gets treated no differently than a Spice Girl. Even then we drag ourselves down to the level of schoolgirl fans with this name calling, rule quoting, waving our arms around for attention bullshit.

No more. I was gonna write, not that you fuckers give a shit, a screenplay or a novel or something. And now, fuck that. If I write anything, the only thing that's gonna have my name on it is the check. Kevin, you have nothing but my sympathies. If this is the shit that you have to put up with, I'm truly sorry, and I'll bet you never thought it'd be like this. Good luck.

As for the rest of you, well, good luck fighting over the scraps of news. Good luck in thinking up obscure questions for Brian or Vincent, just so you can have the buzz of seeing a red name under your own. Good luck with your genuine questions, you newcomers - perhaps you'll get lucky and someone decent will answer you before the fools rush in to read you the regs. If I was an optimist, I would hope that maybe a solution could be found, but I'm not and there ain't one. If you can make it through the Vulgarathon without the riot police being called I'll be impressed, because things are looking bleak.

You can say what you like from here on in. I'm not going to bother reading it.

I joined VA about 10 years ago, and left when Kevin and others started posting links to ideepthroat videos. Way too much clutter, and the site has never been sfw. Not bashing anyone, I just didn't find the board in its entirety a fun place to visit.

But, I know a lot of people are going to miss it, that is if it's not just a temp shut down.

All it takes is one bad apple.

Wow, weird. I left around the time of the 95 Thesis thread. It seemed like everything was getting less fun. Plus at that point my main reason for going was to keep up with what Kevin was saying and he was barely around anymore. I'd heard Party Truck and it seemed like maybe this board was more for me. Too bad for yous guys, I suppose.

I don't know. I think it depends on the board. Skimming through a Somethingawful or a 4Chan makes my stomach hurt, but not even the Lethal Weapons or Jeremy Londons of this board even begin to reach the awfulness of the most civil threads on those boards. I'm happy to have you guys.

The VA board was probably one of the first places I actively seeked out when I first went online, I wanted to know what the Mallrats thing was all about.

It's a weird thing to bring a stranger into your life, it get exponentially weirder when it's so many people. Triple that when the thing attracting most people is your own notoriety. With that, there's a capital to be traded with each interaction, not information or ideas but the power of shared fame.

What's the appeal of posting offensive content in a thread? Annoying the famous guy, get his attention and get his power. It gets gross pretty quick and pretty easy.

Can't blame the guy for turning it off, but I'm a bit sadder than I thought I'd be for its passing.

I still browsed the board occasionally up until a few months ago, but it really did seem impenetrable unless you wanted to play some kind of forum game or get yelled at for something.

Wow, I haven't thought about the View Askew board in years.  I haven't regularly posted on it since the "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" days.  The last time I ever posted on there...I forget, I either asked what kind of a dog Walt Flanagan had or if there was any truth to the rumor that Linda Fiorentino was going to sue Smith (something about being misrepresented on Dogma's poster...I don't think anything ever came of it, ultimately).  Whatever I posted, it was met with a number of "Fuck you, go fuck yourself and die" responses.  That's when I knew I'd outgrown that board and just hung out on here, Mania, and the late lamented Film-411.
