The death of Gary Coleman brings up an interesting question.

Which celebrity death will be completely fair game for making fun of? Who has to die to where a person could make fun of the deceased and not get shit for it?

Because apparently, it isn't Gary Coleman. And if not Gary Coleman... then who?

EDIT: After some thought, my money is on Spencer Pratt.

Hopefully he won't still be culturally relevant enough to merit jokes when he dies.

Not sure.  While I sometimes contemplate top 10 songs or 10 top movies, I haven't yet found myself contemplating a top-10-list-of-people-I-can't-wait-to-mock-1-hour-after-their-death.

Some nurse is still in the middle of mopping up the contents of his expired bowels; I don't find myself hoping that she first took a moment to look at his face and crack "Gee, I guess that was a Diff'rent Stroke!".

Don't be a dick man, he JUST fucking died, have a tiny amount of tact and respect!

My view on it is celebrity or not, making fun of a death of a innocent person is very disrespectful and isn't cool no matter if the comment is funny.

Not saying anyone here is doing it, but I think that pretending to care about a celebrity (or anyone, really) just because they're dead and therefore associating yourself with a tragedy is also insanely disrespectful.

So if its between that and jokes, I choose jokes. At least its more honest. And I don't think that anyone actually means anything by them, anyway. There's nothing *that* serious that you can't make fun of it - even death.

It was just a hypothetical, no harm meant. Still have money on Spencer Pratt, though, as I'm sure he'll figure out a way to keep in the public eye up until the moment he dies.

Is it really insanely disrespectful to say, "Gosh, I'm sorry that he had a hard life and it's unfortunate that he's dead."?

I mean, sure, Spencer Pratt is a dick. When he dies, go nuts. But Gary Coleman kinda had a rough go of things and got fucked over by a lot of people, including his parents. Maybe give him, say, 12 hours before letting loose with "I guess the kid with the broken halo got himself a real one, huh? Huh? This thing on?"

Hey I'm not saying I personally cared about him but I don't think it's right to be mocking a guy who died. And why is careing about a celebrity disrespectful, he was part of a show I watched as a kid and while I'm not sitting here crying I do feel bad for him and his family/friends. So yeah I guesse I'm being disrespectful actually showing some sympathy for somebody who died whether I knew him or not. I dunno, I just thought that was being human, guesse not.

Can I make a joke if it's in a post about how wrong it is to make jokes?

Oh, man. I am genuinely and deeply sad at this. No joke, no irony. I cannot tell you how I LOVED Coleman as a kid. I forced my family to go see JIMMY THE KID in the theater. I watched every episode of DIFF'RENT STROKES; I had a framed *poster* of it in my room. (My dad worked for an NBC affiliate, and took it off the wall from the station's offices as a present to me.)

It always made me sad that for all that success and fame, he was never able to be happy or feel whole as a grown man, and became such the gleeful butt of jokes.
