I believe it was a fake Southern accent.  [That is to say, the character was faking -- obviously, we know De Niro isn't Southern.]

Yeah, it was basically a Dubya reference.  Guy from New England with a public Texan affect.

You know what's really bizarre is that I saw MACHETE at a screening a day or two before it opened and I can remember in minute detail every mundane thing that happened before I saw it. I remember they made us wait outside and it was a really hot day and I was worried that the sweat I could feel trickling down my back was going to soak through my shirt and gross out everyone behind me. I remember the exact spot in line where I was standing and getting Panda Express to eat while waiting. I remember there were two douchebag guys behind me who apparently hadn't seen each other in a long time and were telling each other where they were working now and what their mutual friends were up to. But I don't remember two things from the movie, even after people name things that happened in it. It's like MACHETE was neuralyzed out of my brain.
