"Retcon Bomb" may be one of my favorite comic ideas ever.  Meta-weaponry!

There is definitely a comic somewhere which has a "retcon cannon" (or something like that), which is the same idea but a better pun.

I want to say that it's Dan Slott who wrote it, but the idea is somehow linked in my memory to Lynch.  It's possible that Brian was the person who told me about it, but I'll feel a little guilty if the reason for that association is that Brian himself wrote it.

I think Lynch's joke was something in either Spike: Asylum or one of his early Angel issues about an 'official cannon'.

Guess one more time -- it's in 'Shadow Puppets'.

I hope Brian can forgive my unpardonable lapse; I'm glad I hedged my bet.

That's hardly a change from the first series, is it?  Wrestling match (for the third time) notwithstanding, Tobey's Spidey wasn't exactly quick with the quips.

Well, yeah, a common complaint about the Raimi movies is that Spider-Man didn't do much of the wise-cracking.  Since the trailer makes the movie look so dark I'd guess we won't see any wise-cracking this time around either.  But it looks like we will get the webshooters.

Yeah, I think the thing is that Parker *is* dark for a little while.  Especially between Ben being shot and the robber being unmasked.  Within the comics that's, what, two pages?  The longer that is spent on the origin (especially delving into why, specifically, he was orphaned), the less time he's actually the Spider-Man that Spider-Man is supposed to be.

It's not just the origin, though; the biggest missteps in the comics have *always* been tied to pushing Parker to be darker and more morose.  Like robot-Richard and Mary coming back, that drove him over the edge for a while (I think that was one of the times MJ left him, but it might've been when she was so stressed out she started smoking).  Or like the clone saga, when he got so stressed out that he slapped his pregnant wife.  I mean, the dark can work in short doses -- Gwen Stacy dies, he's upset for an issue and kills the Goblin, and then he bounces back.  It still haunts him, and some people write it off as "Spider-Man just uses his humor so he doesn't have to deal with feeling depressed", but that's Spidey.  I think.

Yeah, exactly.  I think it was Kevin Smith that had a really great quote about Spider-Man that I thought was dead on.  He said he's "the Charlie Brown of superheroes".  He takes physical and emotional beatings but nothing really breaks him long-term.

The darker stories work, though, in some cases.  Gwen Stacy's death, Harry on drugs, getting buried alive by Kraven, etc.  But the point is that he's got heart and intelligence and he always comes back.  That's one of the things that makes him such a great character.

The vibe I get from this new trailer is that this isn't that guy.

I don't know why I'm having such a hard time getting excited for this movie.  Oh, probably because it's so dark, I can't see anything going on in that trailer.

Looks aight. I'm sure it'll be fine.

So in this version he was bitten by a radioactive ninja?  Interesting choice.

I don't think it looks bad, but it is really hard to get excited about it. I've thought from the start that it's a big problem that we just sat through basically this exact same story not ten years ago, and this trailer doesn't convince me that I was wrong. Still, it does please me to see a SPIDER-MAN movie without Raimi, Maguire and Dunst involved. And I already like Garfield better than Maguire, though that's a pretty low bar to clear.

I'm still mad that CB Barnes never got a chance to play Peter in a live action film...

He's actually cracking wise in the trailer I saw.  This was heartening to me.

I thought that was great.  He was funny in the car, he was a great Peter Parker.  That looks really fun.

I liked it, Garfield and Stone are both much more likeable and lively than Maguire / Dunst. There were still some goofy parts though, like the red spider-logo painted on the wall. Also, I don't know why he'd build a red LED into his web-shooters that blinks whenever he uses them. Maybe it only lights up when he's running low on web fluid I DON'T KNOW.
