My top ten of 2011, based on how many times I listened to them according to iTunes. Obviously this favors the albums that came out earlier in the year. When there was a tie, I decided which I liked more. This is actually pretty accurate to which albums this year were my favorite, except I'd put Ben Folds and The Black Keys in the top five but they just came out. I'd also probably put the Strokes lower because that album was a bit disappointing.
10. Eddie Vedder, "Ukelele Songs" 9. Vulture Whale, "Long Time Listener, First Time Caller" 8. Death Cab for Cutie, "Codes and Keys" 7. The Strokes, "Angles" 6. Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi (feat. Jack White and Norah Jones), "Rome" 5. Broken Bells, "Meyrin Fields EP" 4. The Go! Team, "Rolling Blackouts" 3. Foo Fighters, "Wasting Light" 2. Beastie Boys, "Hot Sauce Committee, pt. 2" 1. Radiohead, "The King of Limbs"

Now here are my top five favorite songs of the year, based on the fact that I gave them all five stars in iTunes (yep, I rate every single one of my songs. Makes smart playlists very easy).
5. Radiohead, "Codex" 4. The Black Keys, "Gold on the Ceiling" 3. Smashing Pumpkins, "The Fellowship" 2. Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise" 1. The Black Keys, "Lonely Boy"

9. Vulture Whale, "Long Time Listener, First Time Caller" And this is why this thread needs to exist. $5 on Bandcamp. I do wish they had a song with the same name as their album though.

I'm pretty stunned that Metallica is #1 on that list, though. I guess they did have a reason to be pissed at Napster, after all.
Semi-related, I was at a record shop in NYC last week and they had a copy of Lulu for $40. That's a hell of a lot to be able to say "Bro, look what I bought *snicker*".

That album came out strong and still sells. They moved 9 million copies in 1991, then another 3 mil over each decade since.

The website has special collector versions for, like, $120. 'Lulu' is easily one of the most insane releases in years. Also, in my travels I found this picture. It makes me laugh. http://www.dangerousminds.net/images/uploads/LULU1sdfsdfsdgf.jpg

I did. The video looks like it was edited with iMovie and it's way more engaging than the song. I don't know if there's ever been a song so thoroughly flat and forgettable the entire way through.

It's comically bad, isn't it? Like they did a spoof or something.

I haven't listened to the video yet, but imagine it sounds as bad as it looks. Oh, and thanks for all your help making them seem modern and relevant, YouTube.

It's better than Van Halen III, I'll give them that. But yeah, not very good. Even the Eddie solo is a bore.

So even though 'Tattoo' initially bored me the new Van Halen album itself is actually pretty good. Lots of heavy songs, tons of crazy guitar. I guess some of these songs date back to their early days, which you can tell. Overall it kind of sounds like 'Fair Warning' if it was made today. Anyway, good stuff.
