Mel Brooks And Dick Cavett tonight at 9 on HBO

I watched this the other night and damn was it great, they have such a great chemistry with each other. They pretty much just sat around telling stories about the old days and old stars. Some GREAT stories that had me rolling many times through the show. I love hearing stories about classic movie stars. Carl Reiner showing up was a nice surprise too. My only problem with it was I wanted it to be longer, two hours would have been so much better and neither one seemed like they were running out of stories anytime soon.

It's definitely a must see for anybody who likes Cavett, Brooks or just old Hollywood/TV.

By the way, thank you AP for telling me about this. I wouldnt have know anything about it without that post.

I think my favorite part was Brooks's reaction to the guy who said "You look great... not as good as you did from the back of the room" or whatever it was he said.

Maybe I'm missing something, but didn't Carson?

You're missing something huge. Carson was infamously pushed out. That's like the biggest example.

Whoops. Shows how much I keep up with this stuff. Much like Stern, everything I know about late-night TV, I learned from the ANP board.

You should read or watch THE LATE SHIFT. It's all about that. Kind of shocking.

Larry King was definitely forced out. Oprah and Regis got paycuts that forced them out. I think the kind of person it takes to be such a prominent figure is a workaholic that would never quit. Barbra Walters is 81. Who wants to be working at 81?

They should just let Fallon take over, I bet even Leno's old people will dig him, see him as their cheeky grandson or sumptin'. Can't imagine Letterman ever retiring.

Not really.  He could have stayed if he wanted to.  The problem was that Helen Kushnick planted a totally made up story in the press about NBC wanting Carson to leave.  Carson knew she had done it.  What bothered him was NBC's reaction to it was not very strong.  That, coupled with Dana Carvey's impression of him on SNL, made him decide to hang it up.
