In case you missed the Biblical and Egyptian references, from another user on another board:

From the beginning of the show, we've known that the island has been going through a battle of good vs. evil. It's referenced right near the beginning, the scene standing out in my mind being Locke talking about backgammon to Walt in Season 1. The ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

Now our good and evil sides have faces and names (the two men at the beginning, Jacob and Anti-Jacob). I'm feeling that Jacob is the island's force of good, while the Anti-Jacob/Undead Locke is the force of evil.

Jacob seems to be the force of good to me as he seems to be trying to stop the cycle; at the beginning he mentions change and how if it doesn't end, then at least there's progress. He's talking about the island's battle, I think; caught in an eternal loop of good vs. evil. He's trying to stop it by leading people onto the island (thus the ship in the distance, which I think is the Black Rock and the crashing of Oceanic 815).

Also, him sitting at the foot of an Ancient Egyptian statue holding an ankh (a symbol for life) further reinforces the idea that he is the 'good' one. He seems to represent life as a force, possibly even the healing factor of the island. Immortality is a strong theme in the show so far (Richard, and the Valenzetti Equation) and Jacob has the power to maintain life (as seen through Richard).

The anti-Jacob (a friend of mine compares him to Anubis (god of mummification and the afterlife, or, death), which I think is apt), controls the opposite: death. He can appear as any dead soul, and I think he is also the Smoke Monster. Which means over the course of the show, all the dead characters have been created by Anti-Jacob/Anubis to stop Jacob's plans. Looking back at what the Monster/Christian has done, it all fits with the agenda of stopping Jacob.

So now this helps explain almost everything that has happened before in the show! Knowing this, I want to go back and watch the whole series again to see how it all connects and how Anti-Jacob has been playing the game all along...

Another important dichotomy that is related here is Choice vs. Destiny, wherein Jacob's interests fall into Choice (he's always giving choices, even when Ben is about to kill him), Anti-Jacob/Anubis' fall into Destiny (forcing certain events, such as death). It also goes with the island's current situation; lost in a continuous cycle of death and rebirth, fighting between two factions (there are always more "others"). Anubis is attempting to keep this cycle going, while Jacob is trying to break free.

How is he trying to break free? The hydrogen bomb. The flashbacks show him touching each and every one of the people who contribute to the destruction of the bomb, leading me to believe that he's influenced them to actually be able to change what's happening on the island, and that is also why the show's logo was inversed at the end (black writing over a white background instead of white writing on a black backround); it indicates that for the first time something has changed.

The show is genius. Remove Libby, Eko and half of season 3 and it's perfect. I missed some of the Egyptian references, but I caught the Biblical ones.

Sorry Jordy, but this episode shows that they had plans all along.

That's all well and good. I could care less about it now though, maybe that will change next season. I'm glad they set an end date cause I don't think Lost's ratings next season would keep it renewed, it's going to lose a bunch of people tonight who aren't as retardedly loyal as I am.

Honestly, people are going to get pissed the closer this gets to the end. I'll be in heaven though. It really is like they made this show just for me.

Also, the writers of this show must be huge Neil Stephenson fans.

The more I think about this the more hilarious this is getting. They are basically saying you know those characters you've followed for five seasons, fuck that, what about this old battle between these two new guys you know nothing about. I have to hand it too them in an Andy Kaufman kind of way.

The Lost characters being pawns is nothing new. Unless you thought they were controlling their own fate the entire time.

It really is like they made this show just for me.

And me.  I thought this finale was beyond fantastic and ranks up there with "Through the Looking Glass" in my eyes.  From start to finish it had my attention.

Maybe they make the show for Phillies fans? Smiley

Ah, I'm not going to argue with you. But, if a digital George Burns is in next season I'm blaming you for it.

Um. So Juliet isn't going to become the smoke monster, right? They seemed to make a big deal of her getting caught up with the chains. The smoke monster makes the sound of chains rattling when it's around.

So, they're not going to have her become the smoke monster, right? That'd be silly, they must know that.

I really liked this finale, I thought these two episodes did everything a Lost season finale should do which is to somehow change what the entire show has been about all season/series long by introducing a new concept and having it end on a mind bending cliffhanger.

I am a Phillies fan, was at both parts of Game 5 of the WS, and didn't like the finale, for a lot of the same reasons that Jordy said earlier.

I watched it with my brother and said halfway through that I was done with Julliet.  I thought that earlier this season, but her faces last night were really starting to annoy me, not the reason why I disliked the finale.  I also laughed when she was sucked down the cushioned hole.  The whole, "I love you James," made me laugh harder because the romance was so forced and the fact that they intended us to care about it.  Now if Miss Allie was sucked down a hole by chains at the end of "The Notebook" and Noah had to let go I would have a little more stock in it.  I also liked that Julliet wanted to destroy the island and make it all go away because of her broken heart.  She is kind of selfish, eh?

Juliet waking up at the bottom of the hole which dragged everything metal down was goofy.  I bet the guy from Mulholland Drive wishes he got sucked down the hole insead of being speared by a piece of metal, he is just unlucky.  I think I was just upset because she was alive.

The character's motivations and actions did not make sense to me.  Very wishy washy.  I especially liked Miles bringing up the point that I have been thinking about the whole year in that maybe the bomb is what sets up the incident.  It looked liked the other characters seriously were like, "he's right, let us stop Jack!" before the clifhanger commercial break, then proceeded to forget about it and go all commando with a Van like a couple season finale's back.

There was a lot going on in the 70s but nothing really happening.  Obviously they could not change the past, which Faraday found.  John Locke (dead body at least), Sun, Ben and all else were still kicking it present day.  Obviously they were going to blow up the bomb, having that as the last shot annoyed me.  I think they were jealous of '24' and just wanted to come up with their own silent clock gimmick.

I have watched the show from the begining, and considered myself a fanatic, maybe I am just a fan.  I used to love how the show game-changed every season finale, but this one really needed to put to bed certain things and set up the final 16 or 17 episodes next year.

I should point out that there was something that I really liked in the episode.  The reapperance of Rose and Bernard.  Every episode after they were gone I wondered what happened to them.  I really liked their scene.

Can't wait until next season!

I loved how they made Rose & Bernard like Craig on South Park, just wanting nothing to do with the main characters. Made me laugh.

Now I'm convinced that Rose and Bernard Are the skeletons in the cave.
