I guess all I'd expect from a Beverly Hills Cop movie is something on the level of a Ratner movie anyway; on the surface it seems like it must make sense because it's so simple and straightforward, but it really doesn't, but the movie going on behind Murphy feels just enough like a real movie that he can walk through it and be entertaining (when the formula is working).

I think Ratner can handle the aspect that feels almost like a real movie, but not quite, to have going on behind Murphy... and I guess I'm just being optimistic on the Murphy part.  

On the other hand, he took Chris Tucker, a promising young black comedian, and made him into a second rate Eddie Murphy.  Imagine what he'll be able to do with the now second-rate Eddie Murphy...

I do see your point.  But I'm more intrigued now by BHC4 than I wuold've expected to be.

I think if anyone can top Beverly Hills Cop 3's badness it's Ratner.

I have no doubt in my mind that Tim Story could lower the bar far enough to make BHC3 retroactively the "Last Crusade" of the series.

Does a Beverly Hills Cop movie really need a good director?  Really all it needs is a great script and Eddie back in old form.   Ratner knows where to put a camera and make a movie look like a movie.  I think that might be enough (IF it has a good script).  With the right script, and Eddie being Eddie, I think that Marty Martin (On the Lot) could make a good BHC IV.

And like everyone else said, could it possibly be worse then 3?  George Lucas for christ sake.

I know, I was just busting on him for Gigli and Meet Joe Black (two movies I've never actually seen).

I AM a huge fan of BHC and MIDNIGHT RUN.

I'd rather Ratner than current day Tony Scott or John Landis.  I give Brest the benefit of the doubt that his cut of 'Gigli' at least probably made sense.

I'd rather see Tony Scott or Martin Brest, but it's not even about that, Ratner makes franchises terrible.  Of course, this one already is, but I would like it to have a fighting chance at being awesome.

But I guess it was cool that Ratner saved you from drowning.

Not good news. The only thing I can latch onto for even a tiny amount of hope is that Ratner at one point did BEVERLY HILLS COP-Lite stuff like the first RUSH HOUR and MONEY TALKS fairly well. I thought those movies were fun, if disposable. Of course, since then, he's done RUSH HOUR 3, which wasn't fun at all, so maybe even "good enough" is beyond his grasp at this stage.

Awful as he is, I don't see him making a worse movie than COP III. His movie will probably be more on par with the soulless and loud COP II.

I suppose it doesn't matter who makes it, since Murphy will just sleepwalk through it like he does everything else.

Ratner doesn't like anything, because he's never seen anything. He's too busy making himself look awesome and fucking supermodels.

He says he's a big fan of whatever franchise he wants on because it's easy to be on auto-pilot when someone else has already done all the heavy lifting.

I really did like him in 'Dreamgirls'.  But Ratner might be able to drag out the Murphy that Murphy left behind after 'Coming To America'.

I was talking about Landis.  I actually like a few of the Eddie movies of the past few years.  I mean... I thought I SPY was fun.

It's always my go-to answer whenever I'm pressed to name either my least favorite movie or the worst sequel (at least to a good movie) I've ever seen. It may not technically be either, but it sure feels like it. It's the laziest, most joyless, most perfunctory movie imaginable. It doesn't even have the decency to be fun-bad, just soul-stompingly generic. It's the pinnacle of Murphy not giving a shit. For as disappointing and lame as I found INDY 4, it's got nothing on COP III. At least I can point to some fun things about it, where the best I can say about COP III is that there's a segment with Bronson Pinchot that's maybe not as useless as the rest of the film.
