I love love LOVE the Beatles, but i cant bring myself to go see beatles tribute bands. I dont get the whole desire to see impersonators/tribute artists thing. They're just earning a living off of the backs of someone way more talented then they'll ever be.

The Fab Faux is a different animal.

The Beatles stopped touring in 1966 because they felt their music had become too complex to play live.  At the time there would have been no way to play I Am the Walrus or Strawberry Fields live.  What the Fab Faux does is take those songs from the albums and reproduce them as they were on the records.  They don't even try to make their singing voices sound like the Beatles, its all about the instruments and sound effects.

It is Will Lee and Anton Fig from the Letterman band and a couple of other guys who love the Beatles.  They are awesome.

They stopped touring in 1966, and it was because they were tired of the commotion at the concerts mixed with the backlash after lennon's jesus remark and the drama with the royal family in the Philippines. Lennon wanted to stop primarily because of all the screaming at the concerts no one could hear the music anyway, not even them while playing it. So, they decided to concentrate on recording.

This is all true but in subsequent years they gave as one of their reasons for not performing live that the music would be impossible to faithfully reproduce on stage.  The original idea of LET IT BE was to do an album that could be done live, and give a huge concert.  They couldn't quite get it together so they just performed on the rooftop (as can be seen in the documentary).

In any case, the Fab Faux is awesome.

I saw some kinda/sorta okay Beatles tribute band here about six months ago. They did Sgt. Pepper's in its entirety. On the one hand, I agree that they are just piggybacking on someone else's art, but I'm just a fan of live music. As with most any concert I've been to, the songs live have a different feel than they do on record, and since I'll never get to hear the Beatles perform their songs, I'm not above listening to someone else perform it.

Now, if someone was totally dressed up like them, and selling albums of them covering Beatles tunes, that'd be another thing entirely.

The name "fab faux" is a misnomer. There are not 4 people, it is a giant gang of immensely talented studio/session musicians who have painstakingly recreated the produced sounds of the albums in live performances. Guys from Conan O'brian's band, etc.

It is as much performance art as anything else; for one song, THESE 6 guys do strings then switch to horns and these 4 guys have 3 instruments and alarm clocks and whatnot---

The whole thing began as a kind of personal "nerdy" challenge of one of them, who wondered if a really super-produced song could be somehow recreated live, Rube-Goldberg style. It turned out that it could, and they had fun adding songs to their repetoire. And they are giant Beatles fans who do this for fun; it isn't their main job.

They are a sight to behold in full performance.
