http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35304I don't remember the Enterprise having a crane attached to it. Abrams is messing with continuity. Sign my petition!

Every time I hear any news about this movie, I feel like J.J. Abrams needs to listen to that Patton Oswalt routine about what's wrong with the "Star Wars" prequels, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the movie will actually show the Enterprise being built.

Or just the trailer will.

I think it's probably just for the trailer. But then again we're gonna see Jim Kirk's dad when he was young and he was part of the very first Enterprise crew so who knows? Ultimately, I don't think they're gonna mess too much with continuity. I think it's basically going to be the Trek equivalent to CASINO ROYALE...bring it all back to basics by having it take place before what's already been established. ALSO, here's a proof of concept design that may or may not be what we see in the movie.... http://www.gabekoerner.com/ent/ent_123106_0003.jpg

Ultimately, I don't think they're gonna mess too much with continuity. The Patton Oswalt thing isn't about continuity, it's about unneccessary origins. I was going to give you a link, but I can't find it; it's on 'Werewolves and Lollipops'. The gyst is, he doesn't need to know that much about how the things he loves (Vader, Boba Fett, Death Star) become the things he loves. The concept design looks cool enough. It's strange, to me, that they made a big deal about those HD CGI revamps of the original series... and are now doing a different CGI version of the Enterprise. If they'd planned better, they probably could've saved some money and used these new ones on the old shows. and he was part of the very first Enterprise crew so who knows? When you say "he", do you mean Kirk's dad? I hope you just mean Kirk (which is bad enough).

The trailer played in front of CLOVERFIELD last night. People went nuts for the Bad Robot logo in front of it, but the actual trailer was met with a collective shrug. It was a packed house and no one reacted to it one way or the other. And these were largely movie nerds (they went berserk for the IRON MAN trailer) and, I'm assuming, JJ fans. Maybe that $150 million budget wasn't the most sound investment.

I think that $150 Million is already guaranteed to recoup based on curiosity alone.

I can't see what's there to get excited OR disappointed with. I thought it was pretty cool with Nemoy doing the narration. http://youtube.com/watch?v=mG8XbloIMMI And these were largely movie nerds (they went berserk for the IRON MAN trailer) and, I'm assuming, JJ fans. But Iron Man was a cool, full trailer. There was something to go berserk about.

From what I read, the real teaser is different...

It isn't a slam-bang teaser, but this crowd went nuts for the Bad Robot logo. And they went nuts for IRON MAN in the first two seconds of the trailer, when Downey's car pulls up to the curb, implying they'd watched it enough times to have it down. This was a nerdly audience. They reacted to every trailer. If a STAR TREK teaser is met with a wave of collective indifference to a packed midnight screening of a sci-fi movie (and is directed by a guy the bulk of the audience is clearly familiar with), then I think that's a touch damning. I have no way of knowing this, but I would bet every penny I own that if an X-FILES teaser had played last night, those people would have reacted. B. Wolfe

Did you say in the other thread that the crowd also didn't wind up liking the movie, or did I misread you?

I meant Kirk's dad. We see his parents when they were young in the movie. In one of the novels they have Jim Kirk's dad serving under Captain Robert April. I'm wondering if they might touch on that, if the construction scene in the trailer is indeed a part of the movie. I think Patton's beef with STAR WARS is basically "Who cares about seeing Darth Vader as a little kid?" which I agree with. Plus the prequels were useless predominantly because they were all bad movies. Prequels in general I don't think are all that bad of an idea, as long as they're good movies. In STAR TREK's case I think it's safe to assume, since they have the whole crew, we're gonna see a little more then "Young Jimmy Kirk" adventures. Anyway, I'm psyched.

Plus the prequels were useless predominantly because they were all bad movies. Prequels in general I don't think are all that bad of an idea, as long as they're good movies. It's not prequels that I think are a bad idea, it's origin-stories. It's one thing when the origin is "How did Spider-Man get the powers of a spider?" Even in a situation like that, it's a story which has to be told, and gotten through, in order to tell better stories about the character. I was not a big fan of 'Batman Begins' mainly because it focused on (what I thought were) unneccessary aspects of the origin, like where did he order those ears from and in what quantity? But I really don't see the need to find out how Captain Kirk grew to be the character he was in the show. Captain Kirk discovers his own powers of seduction with the computer programmer who runs the 'Kobayashi Maru' simulation and, in doing so, also realizes how important thinking outside the box is? I mean, I'll grant you that sounds better than "He's a little kid, and he's sad because his mom died," but it also sounds like the same problem.
